Trustee of Kings Arms Project

The Kings Arms Project is a Christian Charity which has served the town of Bedford and beyond for 30 years tackling homelessness. We believe there is no such thing as a hopeless case and we work with the most entrenched rough sleepers and those trapped in long term poverty to help them overcome their circumstances. We hold firm to the beliefs that everyone belongs in community, everyone deserves opportunity and God is good which is the foundation stone on which we build. We currently provide support to rough sleepers, low cost accommodation and support to those working their way out of homelessness, accommodation and support to refugees and training and development to help resource people with life skills and improve employment prospects. In this next season we are looking to recruit a number of new trustees to help us as we grow in a number of different areas. We are particularly interested in people who have skills in the following areas:

Financial management. We have an annual turnover of around 2 million pounds and income streams from grants, government contracts and donors. With ever increasing diversity in this area we are looking for support in overseeing this vital area with an ability to understand the markets, trends and investments as we move forward.

Experience with local/national Government. An increasing area of our work is delivering Government contracts and we would value someone who has experience in delivering these services, to help us with the legal aspects of the contracts and building a network from contacts made through this work to help us expand further.

Human resources expertise would be a valuable asset for us. With an increasingly diverse staff team working in a variety of settings we would benefit from input on how best to support them and ensure our practices are the best possible.

Setting up a social enterprise. We have a very exciting new project planned looking at how to bring together the local community and businesses to train and equip people with the life skills they need to be independent and to help them give back into their communities.

Other areas of benefit for us would be local business owners who might be interested in networking for support for the project and people with experience of housing provision as this area becomes more diverse. If you have any of these skills or indeed you have a passion for the poor and disadvantaged with other skills and experience to offer then please send your CV and short statement as why this role appeals to the current Chair of Trustees  This position is voluntary and no previous experience of being on a board of trustees is required. The position carries with it a General Occupational Requirement that the applicant is a Christian. We will provide training as necessary. The board currently meets approximately three to four time a year in the evening

We want our board to reflect the community we support. To enhance the diversity of our board we would particularly like to hear from ethnic minorities and marginalised groups including those with lived experience of homelessness.

King’s Arms Project provide bespoke ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) tuition for our non-English speaking clients to help them further build community and open up further employment opportunities.

To further support this service we are setting up a Crèche at Christ Church, Bedford, to support those families with young children. We have appointed a team but are looking to recruit a number of Bank Staff on zero hour contracts to support the team, as and when required. We are looking for individuals from Assistant to Room Leader level.

You will perform an important role caring for children, maintaining a high-quality, stimulating learning environment and will be a creative and reflective individual, able to implement new ideas to continually improve practice and support the management team.

King’s Arms Project, Bedford is seeking to appoint a dynamic and highly motivated Chief Executive Officer to help drive its growth and development.

The King’s Arms Project is a charitable company with an annual turnover of around £1.4M employing over 40 staff (34 FTEs). KAP provides Outreach, Accommodation and Opportunity areas of service provision, all specifically developed to help people out of poverty. These areas work together to provide joined up, person focused pathways out of homelessness. KAP has been operating in and around Bedford since 1989 and supports between 500 – 700 people every year.

Bedford has one of the highest incidences of rough sleeping in the UK outside of London and in an attempt to address this issue KAP commenced work among the town’s street-homeless in 1989 when a Residential House located in Clarendon Street, Bedford was established. The aim of each area of KAP is to enable the homeless to move towards sustainable independent living as contributing members of their local community. The support available aids people to a point of stability, leaving behind chaotic lifestyles and life controlling issues such as substance misuse and mental health problems, while helping them acquire essential life skills and achieve personal goals. In more recent years KAP has extended its support and expertise to refugee families and displaced people, providing accommodation, advice and language lessons.

The CEO will direct the current activities and future plans of the KAP. Promote all aspects of the KAP, in line with its vision, ethos mission and values. The post carries a genuine occupational requirement (GOR) that the post-holder be a practising Christian.

A proactive hands-on approach, coupled with excellent leadership and communication skills will enable you to make a positive impact on the organisation. Candidates will possess a combination of skills, experience, drive and personal qualities required to lead the KAP. He / she will have a passion for the vision of KAP, for the character, energy and credibility to make the vision a reality. Specifically, they will bring previous management responsibility having had a senior role in an organisation similar to the KAP. Other key skills are strategic planning, sound decision-making ability and a collaborative working style.
